Busan, South Korea

July, 2012

From Seoul Railway Station, I took a high-speed train to visit a seaport, Busan, which is the second-largest city in South Korea. After spending a few days in Busan with my friends, I traveled to Ulsan to take care of business and then rode a bus to Kumi and Choongju to visit my high school and meet my family members. Old memories really die hard...

013 Fish Market: One of the most famous tourist attractions in Busan is JaGalChi Fish Market, where you can eat squid that is still wriggling when you eat it! 023 Dragon Head Hill Park: The park with an observatory tower offers a nice break from the city, and people of all ages can be found here, taking a stroll, seeing the sights, or just feeding the multitudes of ever-present pigeons.

033 TaeJongDae Park: The natural park with magnificent cliffs and a white lighthouse facing the open sea is on the southernmost tip of YoungDo island. 043 PyeongGang: I took a light train to get to the rural town, where I spent 5 years as a solider. The gate to the Air Force Base was still there...

053 Fortress on the Mountain: A good memory from old days... This is the place where I went picnic with my professor's family. 063 Downtown Streets: The coffee shops, restaurants, and movie theaters on the streets where I used to hang out on weekends.

073 Haeundae Beach: It is probably the most famous beach in the country. So much to see as you walk along the promenade along the beach... 083 Pusan National University: I was excited to be reunited with my old professors who welcomed me wholeheartedly. One of my classmates is now the dean of the business school.

093 Pusan Catholic University: I had a few extra hours in the morning, and decided to see my old friends who are teaching there. 103 Ulsan National University of Science and Technology (UNIST): I was invited to give a talk and participate in a workshop at UNIST. The guest house was as good as a 5-star hotel...

113After the day-long workshop with the young and energetic scholars from UNIST, we all had a real good time at an outdoor buffet restaurant by Haeundae Beach... 123 My High School: "The battle of Waterloo was won on the playground of Eaton." This is the playground of a military boarding school, where a boy quickly became a young man...

133 Grandfather's Hometown: The ruins of my grandfather's house where I spent a few summers as a kid. I attended the elementary school when I was in the 4th grade... 143I also visited several places in the surrounding area. The waterfall and the pond are still there, but I met no old friends...

153Ulsan Grand Park: During a weekend, my highschool friend took me to a flower festival at the park in the city of Ulsan. 163Pohang Institute of Science and Technology (POSTECH): I was invited to have a seminar at POSTECH, where I met my old friends from Purdue and LSU.

173Beomeosa Temple: Lovely place to visit. The setting is spectacular with beautiful views into the mountains from many vantage points. 183Pusan Train Station: From the train station, I once took a night train for 11 hours to get to Seoul. It was 30 years ago...
